Cap box has a somewhat stiff outer flap that is finished much like 1840 militia leather with a black oil type finish that shows some crazing. Attached to the outer flap is a false embroidered script letter “D.” Sewn to the underside of the flap is what remains of the broken latch tab.
Inner flap never had an ears, is thin and shows some light wear around the edges.
The body of the box is slightly smaller and narrower than its Union counterpart. Brass finial is present at bottom. Lamb’s wool is present in the interior.
Reverse has a single wide belt loop that looks original to the bow but has been reattached on one edge.
Interesting little Confederate cap box. [AD]
