This cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern of March 1864” infantry cartridge box.
Outer flap exhibits some scuffing and moderate crazing. Oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box with two short leather thongs. Closing tab is complete and unbroken. Tab is sewn and riveted to the underside of the flap. The inner flap is marked “WATERTOWN ARSENAL 1864” and is in nice condition. This flap covers two cartridge tins that remain. This inner flap retains both “ears” that remain tightly attached. The implement pouch is present and also in very good condition. The stitching on the body of the box is tight and unbroken. Belt straps are sewn and riveted. Brass finial on the bottom. Iron buckles are also sewn and riveted; one is loose.
Box measures approximately 7” x 1 ¾” x 6” (for the .58 cal. elongated ball). The two tin inserts held musket cartridges. The brass cartridge box plate is in good condition. [jet]
