A number of different patterns of cartridge boxes were tried in the years following the Civil War to accommodate the new generally issued metallic cartridges and several were issued for trial in the field in 1872. Peter V. Hagner offered two patterns holding 24 rounds in canvas loops inside a leather cartridge box. The height of his larger box, the number 1, posed some problems for the wearer and the shorter “Number 2” was much preferred, especially by cavalry. It was intended that single boxes be worn on garrison duty, but that a trooper could carry two on campaign.

This is an excellent example of the number 2, and so marked on the top rear. Both belt loops and the latch tab are in place. The box also shows the 1875 alteration from .50 caliber to .45-70 cartridges by running a narrow leather strip along the top edge of the loops and reversing the latch tab and stud arrangement, placing the stud on the front flap to prevent the longer .45-70 cartridges forcing the box forcing the tab off the stud if mounted on the bottom of the box.

Along with Dyer boxes, Hazen cartridge loops and prairie belts, these boxes remained in service and were issued throughout the 1870s. With just slight rubs and good color and finish, this is a minty example of frontier cavalry gear.  [sr]
