Very nice conditioned Pattern 1864 cartridge box. The exterior surfaces of the box are very good. The outer flap is smooth and clean. The embossed “US” at center is crisp and sharp. The latch tab is attached to the underside of the flap by a rivet and straight line stitching. Rivet head has slight buildup of verdigris. Lower left corner has an inspector’s mark that reads, “R. WHITE/ U.S. ORD. DEPT/SUB INSPECTOR”. All stitching is tight.

Inner flap matched the outer one in condition. Flap has both ears.

The interior body of the box and the implement pocket are very good. Tin is present. The bottom of the box has both roller buckles and round brass finial. Slight verdigris is present on the finial.

Reverse matches the rest of the box in condition and has both the belt and sling loops. There is a crack in the left belt loop. Center has a maker’s mark that reads, “S.H. YOUNG & CO. / NEWARK N.J.”.   [sl]
