This cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box. Outer flap exhibits moderate scuffing and crazing with some finish loss along edges. Flap features an oval “US” box plate which remains in very good condition. Closing tab is complete and unbroken (possibly an old replacement) and is sewn to the underside of the flap. The inner flap is unmarked. This flap covers two cartridge tins that remain in place. This inner flap retains both “ears”. The implement pouch is present and complete. The stitching on the body of the box is tight and unbroken. Belt straps are sewn and riveted. Brass finial and two iron roller buckles are found on the bottom.
Box measures approximately 8” x 2” x 5” (for the .69 cal. elongated ball). The two tin inserts held musket cartridges. Leather is flexible and shows heavy use, but a complete and reasonably priced .69 caliber cartridge box. [jet]
