UNION INFANTRY 1861 PATTERN .69 CALIBER RIFLED MUSKET CARTRIDGE BOX AND SLING

Item Code: 1032-80

A fully regulation and typical early war cartridge box and sling for a .69 caliber rifled musket, with which many, many soldier were armed in the early years of the war before imports or production of the .58 caliber rifle muskets could catch up to demand. To accommodate the “elongated ball” (“Minie ball”) cartridges used with the .69 caliber rifled muskets these boxes are wider than both the .58 caliber cartridge boxes and those used for smoothbore .69 musket, whose buck-and-ball rounds were less precisely fitted to the bore. In addition to provision for the shoulder belt, the box has the riveted vertical loops for a waistbelt and latch tab secured by stitching only, marking it as a pattern 1861.

The set has not been messed with at all. The box and sling have been together forever and have not been treated with oil, leather dressings or preservatives. There are some rubs to the cover, at edges and flex points, but no large areas of flaking. Belt loops buckles and tabs are in place. The latch tab is secure and full length, though lacking finish from flexing. Implement pouch, flap and tab are there. Both magazine tins are present, but have been pushed in where their edges join at the top center of the box. The dividers are, but have been bent along with the top edges. The sling is full length, with no breaks. Box and sling have original slits for mounting a shoulder and box plate. It does not look like the box ever had one mounted on it. The inner flap of the box has a maker’s stamp that might be made out. The middle line plainly reads “maker.” The upper line seems to contain a manufacturer’s name reading “[…]rich” or something close to that.

This is a very good example of the early war box for the U.S. .69 caliber rifled muskets and large caliber import arms as well. It displays very well and would look great as part of an infantry, long arm or early-war arms display. A previous collector looped a copper wire through the upper horizontal loops of the box to keep the weight off the sling when hanging it up. This could be snipped off, but we have left it in place.  [sr]
