CONFEDERATE PERCUSSION CAP BOX WITH LEAD FINIAL

$750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1032-71

Confederate percussion cap box with lead finial.  This example possesses the “signature” Confederate characteristics of the lead closing finial and single and wide leather belt loop.  Confederate made cap boxes generally resembled their Union counterparts, and were carried by all troopers bearing a percussion firearm.

The leather is stiff, but little flaking throughout the box.  Flaking is limited to areas along the edges of the body and outer flap.  The latch tab is made from a separate piece of leather; it is well-worn, slightly curved, but overall supple.  The inner flap is worn thin, to the point that the lower edge is worn away, an indicator of intensive use.  All stitching appears to be intact.  There is no fleece or pick present.  No manufacturer’s markings appear to be present.

A very nice Confederate cap box, resembling the example from page 72 of Shannon Pritchard’s “Collecting the Confederacy,” which used reclaimed leather imported from London.  [JC]
