Something you never find…this cartridge box is an example of the "Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box still filled with cartridges!

Outer flap exhibits some crazing. Original oval “US” box plate is secured to the face of the box, and you can tell it has been there forever, but there is nothing securing it in place. Brass face of plate remains bright and in good shape. Leather closing tab is sewn to underside of outer flap and is weak but unbroken. Overall, leather is slightly stiff.

The inner flap is marked but maker’s name is unreadable amid the crazing to the finish. This flap covers the two cartridge tins. This inner flap retains both “ears”; both still loosely attached. The implement pouch is present and in like condition. Belt straps are sewn and riveted.  A small hole is worn into the back from bottom corners of the tins. Brass finial on the bottom and both iron roller buckles remain tightly attached.

Box is for the .58 cal. elongated ball. The two tin inserts still hold original musket cartridges! Some loose bullets and torn cartridge paper as well as approximately nine complete musket cartridges remain in the upper sections of the tins. There are regulation “minies” and a Williams cartridge seen there. In the lower compartments of the tins, two fully wrapped packs of cartridges remain. All are soiled and show some rust stains from the long time spent packed in this box.

Extremely rare to find a Civil War cartridge box still full of cartridges!   [jet]
