CIVIL WAR FLAP HOLSTER FOR ARMY REVOLVERS

Hard to find, this black leather accoutrement is an original, Civil War belt flap holster popular during the War. Holster was made to accommodate the Colt M1860 Army revolver and fits the M1851 Navy model Colt as well.

The machine-made accoutrement measures a total of 14 ¾” long with its flap closed. Holster is made from two pieces of thick, black bridle leather; the flap being machine-stitched to the body. A separate closure tab is securely stitched and riveted to the underside of the flap. This tab is unbroken and flexible. Holster has a wide belt loop on the reverse that measures 3 ½” wide at the top and is still strongly stitched and riveted in place. Loop is in strong, flexible condition. Holster body still retains its a leather plug sewn to close the muzzle end of the holster. With a revolver inserted, the flap fits perfectly over the handle and the closure tab secures over the small brass, bullet-head finial attached to the main body. There are no makers’ marks visible.

In good condition, this holster has been heavily treated with leather preservative making it very soft and pliable. Entire leather body is smooth. There are two small, well done, repairs to the leather. One at the edge of the nose cap and second along the stitched seam where the hinge of the loading lever would rub. It also appears to have been re-stitched along the body of the holster. All repairs were well done and do not detract in any way. This is a good, clean military-style flap holster that would accommodate a M1860 Colt or the M1851 Colt type revolver.  [jet]
