SET OF LEATHER SADDLE HOLSTERS

This is an original, seldom seen specimen of mid 19th century military horse furniture. A set of two black bridle leather saddle holsters. Each individual holster is well constructed of bridle leather with a formed flap, brass “cup” tip, brass finial, and yellow trim around flap. Approximate measurements are 15” in length, 6” wide and 2” deep.  Each holster terminates in to a 2 ½” long, brass cylindrical cup that exhibits a series of turned rings.  Holsters have hinged and molded covers or outer flaps that measure 9” long and have a yellow decorative edge sewn on.  Flaps have a leather closure tab sewn to the inside that secures to a brass finial riveted onto the body of the holster.  Both closure tabs are strong and intact.  Both holsters are empty but would fit a martial caliber (.44 cal. or .36 cal.) pistol.  Holsters are connected together with two straps so they would straddle a saddle’s pommel.  Leather shows surface cracking and crazing but is strong. Small separations and repairs on top corner edges of the cover flaps. Stitching is tight. This type of holster set was common horse equipment employed by officers.

An original set of leather saddle holsters in very good condition and would make a fine addition to any collection of equestrian accessories or to a mounted military display.   [jet]
