CAVALRY HOLSTER FOR THE COLT 1860 ARMY REVOLVER

$600.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-5396

This holster for the .44 caliber Colt Army has good color, tight seams, and both the latch tab and toe plug in place. The latch tab is secured with the mid-war system of a rivet and semicircle of stitching. The holster, however, still has the early war style closely conforming to the pistol rather than the late war universal shape intended to fit more than one pattern of sidearm. The flap is flexible, but the holster still holds its form even when empty. The finish is good, showing some scratches and overall crackling and crazing under layers of old polish, but with no unsightly areas of finish loss. The belt loop is solid, with no tears.

These holsters were standard issue for cavalrymen armed with the Colt Army revolver, pretty much the quintessential Union cavalry sidearm. The butt-forward configuration is the standard military pattern, coming from the original intention of wearing the belt holster on the right, but rather far around the troopers back so that he would have to rotate his hand to grasp it. This would add to a cavalry display and look great on an enlisted saber belt.  [sr]
