NON-DUG, SINGLE BRASS CS / US SPUR FROM THE ROSENSTEEL FAMILY COLLECTION OF GETTYSBURG

$275.00 SOLD

Item Code: 173-1057

Unexcavated, intact spurs are a true rarity and this single boot spur, in addition to its obvious scarcity, offers a fine spur specimen of likely Confederate manufacture or that used by either side.  Once part of the famous Rosensteel Family Collection of Gettysburg, this medium-size brass spur is void of any visible stampings. It does exhibit some typical characteristics of CS manufacture; crudely fashioned shanks, non-symmetrical, cut out strap slots, and a large hand cut rowel loose in its shaft. The spur has clean lines and is strong and well made. No cut-in groove on the inside back. Artifact is finished smooth inside and out and measures approximately 4½” long at its extremities and 3” wide at the boot opening. A large, worn, brass rowel with eight points is crudely peened to the end of a sturdy, brass, raised neck.  Rowel rotates freely. All brass has acquired a pleasing, mellow, golden-bronze patina overall. No leather strap. This original boot spur is a great collectable and makes a fine addition to any Civil War cavalry display or collection.
