VERY NICE SET OF CIVIL WAR OFFICER’S SPURS WITH ORIGINAL STRAPS

The officer who purchased these spurs wanted to make an impression. They are brass and were certainly gilt. The raised areas have a mellow age patina. The recessed areas have a reddish tone and may originally have had a russet color that would have set off the gilt, much like a general officer’s belt. The surface of the lower areas is finely grooved and perhaps this was just to help the gilt finish adhere, but even the strap slots show a minute, fine stippling. The side bars show three grooves and the heel of the spur beneath the neck has a central floral motif that spreads out slightly to each side. The rowels are in place, turn freely and are missing no points. Even the original spur straps are present. The black leather has oxidized slightly to brown and the finish shows wrinkling from use, but they are all there and solid and the original black japanned buckles are firmly in place.

This is a very appealing set of spurs and a little research might turn up the military goods dealer offering them during the war. [sr]
