Top is a stamped brass spread-winged eagle over crossed cannons and cannonballs.
Suspended from this is a white metal disk. The obverse shows a Colonial scene of Rev. John Davenport preaching to people with East Rock in the background. This scene is surmounted by a bust of Rev. Davenport. Under the scene is "JOHN DAVENPORT PREACHING TO THE EMIGRANTS 1638."
The reverse has an etching of the New Haven Green and is surrounded by "IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 250TH ANNIVERSARY THE SETTLEMENT OF NEW HAVEN, APRIL 25TH, 1888."
The eagle at top gives the medal a GAR motif.
