Sextant is in working condition. There are two mirrors present. The smaller of the two is very worn on half its face. There are three green shades or lenses that can be moved back and forth. Handle is made of walnut. Measuring arm slides along top arch. Top arch has inlaid bone graduated ruler for readings. One of the two detachable eyepieces is missing. Sextant is marked on top arc in script “E. & G. W. Blant  New York.”  Edmund and George William Blant opened their business in New York in 1824 and closed up in 1866. They sold nautical books, charts and instruments. This sextant is believed to date from the 1850’s. The wooden case has the original label but this has been pasted over by a later label for the Michael Rupp & Co of New York.

Mahogany wooden case is dovetailed with brass handle and two brass hooks. Hinges are also brass as is small lock escutcheon. Lock is broken. Case is in overall fair condition with a crack running the length of the bottom. This is a tight crack and not open. The top also has a double crack. One is slightly open. This crack runs the length of the top. There is also a cut out that is loose on the inside. One corner is also chipped. All that being said the case is still sturdy and solid. Sextant fits well in the case.
