This set of candlestick holders were popular in the mid to late 19th Century and pieces of this set are still found in Civil War camps by relic hunters.

The set is brass and is made up of two concave discs that screw together for storage. When separated, each has a small brass cup that in turn screws into the center of each disc. The disc then acts as a base and a candle can be inserted into the cup. When you are finished with it, the candles are removed and the cups are unscrewed from the base and stored in the recessed areas of the disc. Then the two halves are screwed together for easy storage.

This particular one is in good condition with a wonderful medium patina however one of the cups will not anchor as tightly as it should but this is a minor defect.

This is an ingenious little device that I am sure made the inventor a lot of money.
