In fine original condition is this complete, well-constructed standard set of hydrometer brass weights was produced by the well-known London instrument maker, Bartholomew Sikes. Used in laboratory testing, these instruments, all serialized with number “3423” were used to compute the specific gravity of liquids and determine the strength of spirits for the distiller, tax collector and others.

The complete set of ten, small, graduated, circular, gold-gilded brass weights are stamped from “10” through “90” with one small, un-numbered brass cup (100). The weights fit onto the brass float device which has an integral stem or ruler that is graduated from 1 to 10. The mercury thermometer, in very good working order, is calibrated from 25 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit and is secured to an ivory backboard stamped in graduations from ‘25’ up to ‘111.’ Brass weights along with the brass float and glass thermometer come in a custom two-piece, rectangular, double-hinged walnut wood case.

The fitted case measures 8” long x 3¾” x 2¼” wide and has two compartments within, one velvet covered section customized for the individual weights and the second compartment for the thermometer. Inner box lid is fit with a silk-padded material. Surface of top lid is inlaid with a 2” x 1” ivory plaque or inset that reads “SIKES HYDROMETER.” Inner case shows just minor soiling to the velvet. Two small, brass, clasp-like devices act as closures for the case. No other visible markings appear on case.
