GAVEL MADE BY A CONFEDERATE PRISONER OF WAR - WITH OLD TAG

$195.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: M23764

This handmade wooden gavel has a handle that meas. approx. 9.75 inches long with a solid head that meas. approx. 3.50 inches long x 1.00 wide x 1.00 inch thick. The entire piece has been painted black. Some of the paint has worn off the base of the handle and the edges of the head but 98% of the paint is present.

Sticking out of the handle is a small nail with another on the side of the head. There was a second nail on the side of the head but that is now gone.

With the gavel is a paper label that has darkened with age and has been sealed in plastic long ago. This label has three small holes that match up perfectly with the nails on the gavel. A period ink inscription on the label reads “MADE BY A SOUTHERN PRISONER WHILE IN CONFINEMENT 1865.” Because of the darkening of the surface of the paper the ink inscription is difficult to read.

Both pieces are in good condition.
