VELVET MANTLE C. 1870-1890

Item Code: 742-69

Rich dark chocolate brown velvet mantle has a standing collar and shaped openings for sleeves. The mantle is cut with long squared tales in the front and shaped peplum at the back to sit over a bustle. The neckline and sleeve openings are trimmed with café-au-lait colored brown plush. The same plush is used to create large balls that fringe the lower edges of the mantle.

The mantle is lined with reddish-brown silk satin quilted to cotton wadding.  Stiffened muslin is used as an interlining for the velvet.  There is a cotton and twill tape stay at the waist. The right front tail has a slash pocket in the lining. The pocket is beautifully trimmed with a triangular piece of velvet topped with an accordion-pleated silk satin ruffle and silk satin bows at either end of the pocket opening.

The lining closes down the front buttons covered in ribbed black silk. The outer layer of the mantle closes with decorative toggles and loops. Large brown velvet balls accent each end of the toggles; clusters of three small plush balls dangle from the cord loops between the toggles. The standing collar closes with hooks-and-eyes.
