A well-made civilian, mid-century waistcoat comprised of a two panel breast front in a black satin material. This version has the “Notched Shawled Collar” with seven hand worked corded buttons holes. Overall body stitching is a combination of early machine and hand work. Located within both of the lower front panels are two slit and bound pockets measuring 4 ¾” across and lined with a brown glazed cotton fabric. The 3/8th” buttons are fabric covered (Of the same black satin as the body) metal disks. Inner lining body panels are of a once white cotton muslin (Now darkened with various stains). An interesting feature to note, located inside of front panels at the bottom are two leather strips measuring 9” in length by 1 ½”height. This feature was added at the time of manufacture and its dual function was to straighten and protect the garments lower hem as well as from abrasion by the suspender buttons on the trousers waistband. The rear side of this waistcoat is cut as a one piece panel and is of a chocolate colored glazed cotton. Also attached, is the adjustment belt and black enameled patented buckle.

The overall condition of this garment: The satin fabric is in excellent condition, the only repairs/damages noted is a rectangular patch of satin measuring 2 ¾” by 1 1/4”applied on the right side panel at the mid-section. There is also some small amounts of fraying (Approximately 1 ½”in length) located at the lower front left panel hem.

A nice survivor from the 1860’s and would look great matched-up on display with your period frock coat.
