The machine-sewn bodice features a round neckline, darts, and a faux 3-piece back. The center back section is 1" wide at the waistline. The bodice is trimmed with a double row of watered silk petersham ribbon in a squared U design. The ribbon is attached to the bodice along the top edge only; the corners are crudely mitered. The trimming ends at the shoulder seams. The bodice originally closed with brass hooks-and-eyes; the eyes have been removed.  Brown velvet decorative buttons have been removed from the upper half of the bodice and sewn to the opposite side of the opening between the trimming and the waistline; the relocation of the buttons prevents the hooks from being fastened.  Bias cut coat sleeves have two rows of ribbon on the front of the sleeve, and one row of ribbon on the back of the sleeve. A 1" wide self-fabric bias facing finishes the sleeve openings at the wrist.  The bodice is line with light brown cotton twill. The sleeves are line with dark brown glazed cotton.

The hand-sewn skirt is lined with tan lightweight glazed cotton. The skirt features 3" wide triple offset box pleats, with each layer of the pleat extending ¼" beyond each edge of the preceding fold. A 3½" wide section of gauging accents the center back of the skirt. Twill tape hanger loops are attached to the waistband and there is a pocket in the right front seam. The lower edge of the skirt is finished with rust wool hem braid. A later alteration turned the hem up an additional 3".
