A lovely lightweight silk taffeta dress made from a stunning textile. The iridescent green and purple is accented with woven copper stripes with a trompe l’oeil lace edging on either side of the stripes.  The gathered front bodice has a round neckline and V waistline. The dressmaker’s skill in cutting is evident with the bodice fronts cut on the bias, the side bodice fronts cut on the crosswise grain, and the back bodice cut on the straight grain. The bodice is lined with very lightweight glazed cotton and closes in the back with hooks-and-eyes; a second set of hooks and eyes were added after the initial construction to enlarge the bodice.  A layer of wool padding is placed between the bodice front fabric and the lining to smooth the silhouette over the bosom.

The short slightly flared sleeves are trimmed with two rows of ribbon. The jacquard ribbon is an iridescent purple and green woven with a scalloped edge.  A black lace flounce was added in the late 19th century.

The gauged skirt is lined with gray/beige cotton muslin. A hanger loop is attached at the waist and a pocket is in the right front seam. The lower edge of the skirt is finished with purple wool hem braid attached with a suspended application. The lining was cut 3" longer than the skirt and hemmed to the wrong side before the hem braid was attached.
