Crooked wooden cane made from wood cut at George Washington’s Mount Vernon.

Cain is mad of two sections of cherry wood fitted together. Overall the cane meas. approx. 36.25 inches long.

The upper section meas. approx. 25.50 inches long with a knob at top that looks to be made of ivory. Knob has eight smooth sides with a rounded top. Below the knob is a silver finial engraved with “JOHN T. MITCHELL, MOUNT VERNON AUG. 20^TH 1862.”

The lower portion of the cane fits into the upper. This lower portion meas. approx. 10.75 inches with a worn iron finial at bottom. The upper portion of the cane has four cracks where the lower portion fits into the upper. These cracks vary in length from 1.25 to 3.00 inches. These cracks are old and should not be a problem.

Who John T. Mitchell was is not known. During the Civil War both sides agreed to treat Mount Vernon as non-partisan zone and agreed not to post any soldiers within the grounds of the estate. Soldiers wishing to visit the estate were asked to do so unarmed and in civilian clothes.
