Wall sconces have a dark stained wooden base. There is a brass knob in the center of each used to mount the post-Civil War trapdoor bayonets. Ends of bayonets have been bent into decorative curls. The socket ends of bayonets that attach to rifles are meant for holding candles. Locking rings freely slide. The flat on each is stamped “US”.
This is a classic example of a dealer having way too many items in stock and trying to figure out a way to make them go away. Such was Francis Bannerman's & Co's. dilemma back in the day. Their solution was to take perfectly sound US M1873 socket bayonets, and make sconces and candelabras out of them.
Wood bases measure approx. 13 ¼” x 5 ¼”. Wood has some very light scratches. Brass has a semi-bright patina with some spotting. Bayonets still have original bluing. [SM]
