Here is an old wood box filled with needles, awls, threads, and more. The box measures 8 ¾” x 5 ¼” x 2 ¾”. The lid has beveled edges on three sides and slides in a groove to close. The larger compartment inside contains four wood handled awls, some threads, a leather “finger saver”, a package of Holt’s Black Hand Wax”, and a pack of “SAIL MAKERS NEEDLES”. This is a nice old pack of needles with labels and advertising on both sides…W. Smith & Son, Redditch, England”. A smaller compartment holds more threads, a thimble, thread wax, and a very large sail needle.
The Jared Holt Manufacturing Company made "stitching wax" used to lubricate thread, protect it from moisture, and to help hold the treads together.
An interesting personal item that may have been carried by any old sailor. [jet]
