Made by Brandis and Sons, Brooklyn NY, instrument makers from 1890 till 1920. Sextant is marked on brass scale, “U.S. NAVY / NO. 1839”. F.E BRANDIS SONS & CO. BROOKLYN, N.Y.”. Sextant is complete with original mirror, lenses and shades. Measures at farthest points 7” long x 9 ½” wide x 4” high. Box contains 9” parallel naval ruler, scope and hardware.
Dovetailed wooden box measures 10 1/8 square x 5 ½’ high. Original brass hinges, hooks and handle are present. Interior of box lid has a torn label from the retailer that read, “KELVIN & WILFRED O. WHITE NAUTICAL INSTRUMENTS / 38 WATER ST. NEW YORK”. Torn inspection certificate is present as well, with the maker listed as, “BRANDIS”, and the model number, “18...”. Outside front of box is marked, “SUR. SEX. 1839”. Carved on the top is the name, “N.L.JONES”.
