The League was organized in 1861 as a reaction to the Copperhead movement in the border states. This group demanded that Southern sympathizers be dismissed from the federal government and promoted the vigorous prosecution of the war.
Obverse of silver medal reads, “THE LOYAL NATIONAL LEAGUE / PLEDGED TO UNCONDITIONAL LOYALTY TO THE GOVERNMENT AND TO NATIONAL UNITY”, with an image of a spread-winged eagle below wording. Reverse shows an image of crossed U.S. flags and reads, “A COMMON UNION TO MAINTAIN THE POWEWR GLORY AND INTEGRITY OF THE NATION. / UNDER AUTHORITY OF THE LOYAL NATIONAL LEAGUE”. Hole is present at the top on obverse side. Medal is the size of a silver dollar. [sl]
