A lovely dress made from a stunning fabric. The iridescent silk taffeta is woven with vertical pin stripes in pale lavender and black and horizontal checked ribbon bands in ivory and black. The darted basque bodice has a round neckline and a 3-piece back attached to a single layer lining. At the time of construction, the bodice closed with concealed hooks-and-eyes and had decorative buttons. Most of the hooks-and-eyes and the buttons were removed at a later date. The peplum is constructed as a completely separate piece and is whipped to the piping at the bottom of the bodice – possibly a later addition. Knotted silk chenille and thread fringe accents the lower edge of the peplum.  The modern Venice lace collar was added at the turn of the 20th century.

The slightly-flared open sleeves are lined in lightweight glazed cotton, have a self-fabric facing, and are trimmed with the same fringe as the peplum. The original undersleeves are still attached. They are made from a cotton net woven in a square pattern with dashed dots.  The sleeves are gathered at the wrist and accented with purple silk ribbon. The ruffle created by the gathers is left unfinished.

The matching skirt was originally gauged and pleated and has been altered over the years. It is fully lined with light weight ivory glazed cotton. There is no pocket. The skirt has a brown glazed cotton hem facing and is finished with lavender wool hem braid.

Note this item now has some storage damage; additional photos have been added.
