LARGE CARPET BAG DATED 1865

$100.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 1054-311

Original carpet bag typical of the Civil War and Reconstruction era.  Main body constructed of heavy “carpet”; bottom and sides of leather. A hinged metal frame keeps the top edge rigid and a pair of leather handles are sewn and riveted at the top. A single leather strap and iron buckle remains.  There is a simple brass escutcheon plate mounted on the frame under the handles. A rotating eyelet acts as a closing device.

Carpet material retains good pattern and color but shows wear. Leather side show heavy wear with tears on one of the sides. Leather bottom has several pen & ink marks, one being “1865” and another “NY”.

A fine example of a typical “carpet bag” of the era.  [jet]
