Original carpet bag typical of the Civil War and Reconstruction era. Main body constructed of heavy “carpet”; bottom of stiff board with tarred cloth. A hinged metal frame keeps the top edge rigid and a pair of leather handles were sewn at the top. The front handle has broken off but is inside; back handle has been restitched in place. There is a simple brass escutcheon plate mounted on the frame in the front. The maker’s name “TERRY & CO” appears around the top of the key hole.
Carpet material retains good pattern and color. Bottom remains solid with six round, brass pads.
A white cotton “lining” is complete and present, but unattached inside.
A typical “carpet bag” of the era. [jet]
