Item Code: 801-03

Baseball uniform blouse and trouser set consisting of a dark blue colored twilled wool flannel (very similar in color, weave and weight to the Civil War Union enlisted fatigue blouse material). The front of this blouse exhibits a tapered “bib” type chest panel with a double row of applied narrow white tape joined together by eight 5/8” mother-of-pearl buttons. There is a central (nautical theme) device of an anchor located on the bib applied in tape same manner as on the collar and cuff trim. The collar exhibits two white tape applied five point stars and finally bordered by a duel set of tapes. Entire blouse appears to be completely hand sewn, main seams, buttons holes and taping. There are some minor moth holes (3) located on the shoulder area directly behind the collar; there is also a 2” length tear on the bottom left skirt and a 1” hole located on the right hand lower skirt.

The accompanying straight leg trousers are of the same dark blue twilled wool material as the blouse. Again, totally hand sewn throughout. Has 1 white metal waistband button and 4 metallic fly buttons. There is one pocket located on the right side along the seam, lined with a brownish shirt weight woven cotton-grid pattern material. This same material was used to line the waistband and inter (button side) fly. Also, there is an interesting feature within the right buttocks area, a large dark brown 6” X 12” wool rectangular patch hand sewn to reinforce some worn areas on the outside. On the rear side near the waist vent is the adjustment belt of wool along with an iron buckle. There are small amounts of scattered areas of moth holes and abrasions within the seat and on the legs.

Along with this uniform set comes a baseball bat that’s design has a mid-19th century origin. A long tapered shaft measures a full 47”in length, and terminates in a ball shaped knob. Located at the very top center of this bat is what looks to be a ¾” in diameter cork material insert. The wrist is wrapped in a black tarred cloth like tape. The shaft appears to be free of cracks and splits, but there are scattered dents and dings, mostly located near the uppermost head area.

Included with this set is an unrelated pressed designed papier-mâché wall frame containing a CDV image of an 1860’s-1870’s baseball player in a studio pose, leaning on a bat very similar in nature to the one described above. Under magnification he is wearing a waist belt with initials CKWY. The Photographers name and address appears on the rear, which reads: STANTON & BUTLER 79 W. FAYETTE ST., ONE DOOR FROM CHARLES, BALTIMORE. Unfortunately, no known provenance is associated with this grouping. Never the less, A RARE SURVIVOR considering the age and the wear and tear.
