Item Code: 179-604

Mid-19th century collapsible pewter traveling-drinking cup with Japanned coated tin case. Cup consists of three interconnected tapered rings of polished pewter with a flanged base, measuring 3” fully extended. The mouth measures 2 ½” in diameter with the base measuring at 2 ¼”. These cups were very popular with civilians and the military alike. Small when collapsed (Being only 1 ½” in height) in its carrying case and very conveniently portable in the pocket or Haversack. Fragments of these cup rings have been excavated at many Civil War sites. This specimen is in near mint condition, with only a very minor dent to the base lip. The pewter body is still brilliantly bright and the tin case contains 90% of its original Japanned coating. Also of note, there is a letter “W” stamped in the center of the base (possibly a manufacturer’s mark?)  A nice go-with item for your camp display.
