Item Code: 173-1130

A very scarce example of an English imported (small scaled, single cup) version in an octagon cross section shaped body with a “Goose Neck” design spout. This pattern is referred to as the GRAPE & PANEL design. The original lid shows a grape cluster finial knob mounted on the top of the octagon panel. Other motifs are the handle is in the form of vines, then terminating as two grape leaves at the handle’s base.  Signed on the base (faintly impressed lettering) is the name of the manufacturing firm of BARROWS & Co; this firm dates to 1853-56. This specimen stands at 6” in height by 3 ¼” across at the base and is complete and shows signs of light glaze crazing overall. There is a very, very tiny lip chip located at mouth of the spout. No other damage. Ironstone pieces such as these have been recovered from period steamboat wrecks and sunken cargo vessels.
