Spoon measures approximately 8 ¼” long. Large bowl with flat edge and ornate handle. Initials “CD” engraved on underside of handle. A worn touch mark and “HYDE & GOODRICH” is stamped on the underside.
This firm can be traced back to James Hyde who came to New Orleans in 1814 as a silversmith and jeweler. By 1816 he occupied the same location at 58 Charles Street as Charles Goodrich, but the firms were separate. “Hyde & Goodrich” is listed in the 1832 New Orleans City Directory. By July of 1861 the partnership had been dissolved and the fall of New Orleans in 1862 ended the firm. They are perhaps better known to Civil War collectors as button makers. [jet]
