This is a nice example of a popular commercial mess set marketed to soldiers as an alternative to their issue mess gear, which was often flimsy. As combination fork, knife and spoon it had the allure of any new or innovative gadget. Soldiers sometimes displayed them in photos sent to the folks back home, either as another wonder of the modern age or just assurance they were getting along fine and had plenty to eat.

This one was made and marked by the New York Knife Company of Walden, NY, who were in business from 1856. It was a popular form. The knife could be used separately, for other purposes if need be. The fork and spoon are on the same section for alternate use. The condition is very good. The metal has some graying, but a smooth surface and no deep pitting or edge nicks. The spoon is an alloy, necessary because the technology for forming bowls of harder metal was not fully developed. These were made by a number of companies. Salesmen touted their convenience, ease of carry, and lesser chance of losing an implement in the depths of a haversack.

This one has the initials “JNF” lightly carved in the wood on one side. Having paid good money for it, or having received it as a sentimental parting gift from a loved one, the owner likely wanted to keep track of it in a military camp crowded with men less virtuous than himself. This would look great in a display of a soldier’s personal effects and camp gear.    [sr]
