This can meas. approx. 5.00 inches tall and 4.25 inches wide. Top has small circular opening that meas. approx. 2.00 inches across. Exposed tin has some light discoloration and light surface rust. White paper label on front with typical 19th century lettering and decoration. At center is colored lithograph of tomatoes on the vine. Across the top is “FRESH TOMATOES” while across the bottom is “JOHN W. STOUT & CO. NEW YORK.” All lettering is approx. 0.25 inch high. Back of label is white with blue stripes and a red Roman numeral X. Label is heavily water stained on back. Front of the label has two small chips missing and some thin cracks in the paper. The back has 5 chips, one that is rather large. The amount of paper loss is small, maybe 10%-12 %.This type of can is often dug in Civil War camps and is seldom encountered with the label intact.
