Here is an original English-made, stem-wind pocket watch manufactured by the British firm of Tobias & Company of Liverpool. M.I. Tobias (Michael Isac) started a watchmaking career in Liverpool around th1805 the family firm was in business until 1868. Tobias specialized in exporting his watches to the United States and in 1820, he began using Swiss movements and also started engraving the watches with “LIVERPOOL.”

This fine piece of watch craftsmanship is an 18K gold, key-wind, open-face design sized at 48 mm. The pleasingly engraved face is of silver and features a four-spired castle scene in a country setting. Has the inner dial at the six-o’clock position and retains its second hand. Both movement hands secure to the stem. Original glass face protector is very clear and intact but completely loose from its circular frame. The watch has a key wind, patent-lever bar movement with a cylinder escapement. Key accompanies the watch. Watch not presently operative but could be with some cleaning and care. Inner back movement cover is very lightly engraved with a hand-marked “L & L------ / F. J. / 10227 and “WNELE.” Inner body cover stamped with “PATENT LEVER / FULL JEWELLED / No. 10227 / M.I. TOBIAS & Co. / LIVERPOOL.” The entire gold case retains a pleasing mellow light sheen overall. No chain or vest attachment. A very pleasing specimen of an English-made time piece in fine original condition.
