Presented here is a Civil War era woman’s dress accessory in the form of a bracelet made of braided human hair. Hair jewelry and hair decorations were very popular at the time and were usually made from the hair of family loved ones and presented as a lasting sign of remembrance and love. Long, human hair strands were intricately and tightly braided together to form thick strings that in turn were handcrafted into special jewelry forms. This beautiful braided and intricately woven bracelet measures approximately 7 ½” long overall.  The hair portion measures 5 ¼” long and 1” wide. Brass section with floral design attached at each end. At one end is a 1 ¾” x 1 ½” oval piece with a brass frame; on the exterior is an outdoor scene, and on the inside is a bust image of a gentleman with mutton chop sideburns. An interlocking brass clasp secures the bracelet to the wrist. Women wore this accessory for special occasions attached to their garment. This specimen is a wonderful example of hair jewelry and would make an ideal addition to any collection.
