Ornate, lacquered pressed paper box and hair chain were made by a German POW after the revolution of 1848.  Sleeve has colorful floral and leaf design with gold gilt border. Lettering in gilt reads, “AMALIA ROLLLEULLMER / 10 JULI 1851”. Sleeve slides off of a yellow paper box which has the lid lift up at each end. One side opens to reveal a small brass framed mirror on the underside, and the other side has drawings of a military helmet, rifle, pistols and sword with the year, 1848. Below this is a drawing of a prison cell with ball and chain.

Inside of box is a long chain woven of light and dark hair. Chain measures 20 ½” when doubled. Ends are hooked together with a brass ring.  [sl]
