CIVIL WAR ERA GOODYEAR’S PATENT U.S. NAVY GUTTA PERCHA SHAVING KIT

$250.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 998-636

Shaving kit is two pieces that open up to reveal a mirror inside of the lid. Bottom dish was meant to hold a bar of shaving soap. Top of lid has a ribbed design with an embossed image in the center of a fouled anchor with twisted rope and thirteen stars. Raised lettering reads, “DON’T GIVE UP THE SHIP / U.S.N”. Circling the mirror is the maker mark which reads, “MANUFACTURED BY THE NOVELTY RUBBER CO., NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY / UNDER GOODYEAR PATENT MAY 6, 1851”. Metal eye ring on lid meant for hanging mirror is present.

Mirror shows heavy oxidation. Gutta percha is in very good condition with no chips or cracks, just some areas of light wear. Measures 3 ¼” in diameter by nearly 1 ½” high.

These shaving kits are described and depicted in the "Civil War Collector's Encyclopedia" by Francis Lord. They were issued to and used by sailors aboard U.S. Navy ships during the Civil War.  [sl]
