CIVIL WAR PERIOD HOUSEWIFE

$200.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 224-336

Hand-sewn housewife is made of tarred lambskin which is lined in beige polished cotton. It is trimmed in blue silk, which was wrapped around edges and sewn. Two sections show the exposed lambskin. Housewife folds in thirds then triangular flap closes over body. Would have originally had fabric ties to secure, but these are missing. Inside features two gathered pockets with decorative bows.

Shows signs of heavy use and distressing. Most stitching is intact, but there are small areas it has ripped. Unfolded, measures 22” total length, folded 7”. Measures 4” wide.

This is a nice artifact that was commonly used by Civil War soldiers. The age and wear only add to its appeal.  [sl]
