Presented by a US army captain to L.C. Allin of Springfield, Mass., this packet contains of six cigarillo sized cigars within a manila wrap, measuring 4.5” in length, 1.375” in diameter. Outer wrap has printed Mexican stamp, partially decipherable [“….Grede Tabaca/ Departament du Servacio”], as well as later presentation label in English [“Sent from Mexico to Springfield, Mass.,/ by a Capt. In the war. 1843”/ Presented by L.C. Allin]. This label garbles the facts contained in the inked period inscription beneath, which reads: “1848 Presented to/ L.C. Allin/ by a Capt. In the Mexican War/ Sent from Mexico to Springfield/ Mass.”
The enclosed cigars are tight and in unbelievably good condition, as is the manila wrapping, open at both ends. Inked inscription is sharp and clearly intelligible. Highly unique, to say the least. An absolute must for Mexican War, and Civil War, buffs too. Longstreet may well have offered a similar cigar to Pickett after the storming of Chapultepec.
