Finished walnut wood box meas. approx. 18.00 x 10.50 x 6.50 inches closed. The wood exterior is in good condition with light surface dirt and seven or so small water spots on the lid. Also on the lid is a closed horizontal crack running half way across its surface. The top has a blank small scalloped brass name plate that meas. approx. 2.25 x 1.25 inches. The front of the box has a lock with a brass escutcheon and key. The lock will operate but it is stiff. The lower section of each side has a fold down disappearing brass handle. The handle on the left side doubles as a drawer pull for a hidden drawer that is released by a pin passing through the edge of the box. The pin is obvious when the box is opened.

The lid is raised on two brass hinges, one in each corner. When opened there is an upper and lower writing surface. The top leaf will lift to expose a storage area underneath while just forward of it is a compartment for holding pens and ink. The dividers forming this compartment have come loose but are present. The lower leaf will also lift to reveal a lower storage compartment. The entire writing surface is covered with a soft felt material that has browned with age.  [sm]
