This wooden artifact from the mid nineteenth century is a large but portable writing case or lap desk that many Civil War officers carried in their luggage during the war.  When closed, the two-piece, hinged writing desk measures 16½” long x 10” wide x 6” high with an exterior covered in a handsome natural burlwood veneer that is bordered with ½” wide strips of English walnut along all edges. There is some slight edge chipping of the walnut strips along the lid and box base edges. Glued to the bottom surface is a beige-colored velvet cloth fabric that shows wear with some moth holes and small tears.

Box lid opens upwards and reveals a flat, two-piece writing surface covered in a pleasing, sky-blue velvet material in very good condition with areas of thinning, and a few ink drops or spots. Each writing surface opens to expose a deep compartment below for paper and storage.  Both compartments very clean.  Front interior edge of the box bottom is divided into sections for pencils, pens, ink vials and other sundry writing items. One compartment the brass lock shield and the brass key for this lockable writing desk. A fine piece of Americana memorabilia.
