Image is a full standing view of Dr. Walter B. Lancaster in uniform. He wears the standard OD 5-button high collared tunic with US and Medical Caddices with matching trousers, knee-high boots and spurs. He holds his officer’s peaked visor cap in his right hand. Lower left corner of image is signed “WALTER B. LANCASTER / MAJOR, M.C. / 1918.” The doctor is posed in front of a painted backdrop of a woodland scene.

The image is clear with good contrast. It is in the original wood frame that meas. approx. 7.50 x 10.25 inches. The photograph should NOT be removed from the frame as the right side of the image has sections of emulsion has become stuck to the glass over the years. The back of the frame has the original paper backing with a label that reads “ARTISTIC PICTURE FRAMING SOLATIA M. TAYLOR CO. 56 BROMFIELD ST. BOSTON, MASS.” Paper backing is chipped around the edges. Eyehooks are present and only wire is needed to make it ready for hanging.

Dr. Walter Bernard Lancaster was born March 9, 1879 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He was a graduate of the Wofford Fitting School and the Vanderbilt School of Medicine. During World War One he served as a Dr. of Ophthalmology. In 1943 he was presented the Leslie Dana Gold Medal for outstanding achievement in prevention of blindness.

Dr. Lancaster died in Columbia, South Carolina on December 21, 1960 and is buried in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Spartanburg, South Carolina.  [ad]
