This is a period salt print image of Union infantry line officer posed full length in a studio. His long curling hair and chin whiskers strike one as an early-war style. He wears the regulation single-breasted frock coat of a captain or lieutenant, with a sword belt and sash around his waist, holds his 1850 foot officer’s sword to one side by the hilt, and with his other hand holds his forage cap down along his side. The photographer has lightly tinted and retouched the image, but the numeral “2” seems pretty clear in the large bullion infantry officer’s hunting horn insignia on the front of his cap. The low number would back-up an early war date, as does the absence of a tax stamp on the reverse of the original mount. The man himself also appears a bit older than many, perhaps partly due to his hair and whisker style, but suggesting he might be one of the established and prominent members of a community who led companies of raw recruits off to war in 1861.

The cardstock mount shows some staining and foxing around the edge that does not affect the image itself. The gilt wood frame is about 8.5 by 10.5 inches and has good color overall, though with rubbing and paint loss along the raised middle rim that could be disguised. The glass is in place; glass and image are not held securely in the frame. The image itself is about 5 by 7 inches.  [sr]

NOTE: The frame does contain glass. See our policy for shipment of framed items.
