LARGE TINTED ALBUMEN OF COMPANY E, 6TH PENNSYLVANIA CAVALRY (RUSH’S LANCERS)

$950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 37-305

This well-known and often published image shows approx. 40 members of Company E, 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry aka “RUSH’S LANCERS” posing for the camera with their lances, guidon and several horses. At least four of the men are mounted. In the center background is what appears to be the photographer’s darkroom wagon. Most of the soldiers have had their uniforms tinted with the coats being a darker blue than the trousers. The guidon has been completely hand colored and stands out prominently.

The view itself is clear with fair to good contrast. The image meas. approx. 14.00 x 11.00 inches and is mounted on heavy stock that meas. approx. 17.00 x 14.00 inches. The upper left corner of the mount and image have a dark staining that appears to be from water or coffee. Where the stain touches the image only the area of the sky is affected. The mount is severely chipped along the top edge with a narrower chip out of the left side. The bottom right corner is bumped and there is a small chip out of the bottom center edge. The mount also has some light to moderate surface dirt.

Under the photo on the bottom of the mount in a nice bold hand is a period ink inscription in two lines that reads “INCIDENTS OF THE WAR / COMPANY E, 6TH PENNSYLVANIA LANCERS CAPT. E. N. CARPENTER COMMANDING.”  A similar inscription can be found on the reverse side of the mount.

The 6th Pennsylvania Cavalry was raised in Philadelphia from August to October 1861 and was assigned to the Army of the Potomac. The regiment took part in the Peninsula Campaign being engaged at Gaine’s Mill, New Cold Harbor and Harrisons Landing. The regiment remained with the army through the campaigns of Antietam and Fredericksburg but were employed in small detachments. It was heavily engaged at Brandy Station on June 9, 1863 and was lightly engaged at Gettysburg. During Grant’s Overland Campaign they saw action at Todd’s Tavern, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, Trevillian Station and Deep Bottom. The regiment had its last engagement at Dinwiddie Court House on March 31, 1865. The regiment was mustered out on June 17, 1865. The number of killed, wounded, died of wounds, died of disease etc… was approx. 311.

This a nice sized and detailed image of one of the best know Civil War cavalry regiments.
