Albumen image showing the camp of the 1st New Jersey Infantry. The contrast of the image is very light but the details are visible. The regiment has set up their Sibley tents in the fenced in yard of what looks to be a municipal building. Some soldiers can be seen standing around near the edge of the camp.
The image meas. approx. 10.00 x 8.00 inches and has a very nice heavy period ink inscription along the bottom that reads “CAMP OF THE 1ST REGT. N.J.V. FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA.” The upper edge has a narrow water stain and the upper left corner exhibits an old crease line. Two corners are also slightly chipped.
The reverse has some light pencil inscriptions which are difficult to read.
The 1st New Jersey Infantry saw action from the Peninsula to Petersburg and served most of that time in the 6th Corps.
