Here is a unique, framed Civil War albumen photo that presents an image of two rows of Federal soldiers that include ten musicians and one non-commissioned officer. The very fine quality albumen image measures 9½" wide by 7" high and is professionally double matted and framed and set in a large period walnut frame. Frame measures 17" wide x 15" high.
Photo is remarkably clear and strong and depicts a studio view of a motley crew of young musicians wearing their uniforms. Most have on sack coats while some wear non-regulation fatigue jackets. The front row consists of four drummers seated on their side or snare drums holding drumsticks in their left hands. Six more musicians stand in the back row holding their wind instruments, with five holding their fifes and one man holding a single twist brass bugle in his arms. A quartermaster sergeant at the far left of the row wears a leather sword belt with metal scabbard attached and holds what appears to be an unsheathed foot officer's sword directly in his front. All men wear kepis or bummer's forage caps and a regimental number is visible on one of the caps but it is too difficult to discern.
Frame and albumen are both in very fine condition. The antique wood frame is decorated with handsome gold and black painted fillets that are ornately engraved at each of the corners. Frame bears just normal scuffmarks and slight scratches. A uniquely framed, photographic image of Union musicians that compliments any Civil War photo collection or musical focus. Ex-John Henry Kutz collection.
