Large albumen image of Charles W. Reed, of the 7th Massachusetts infantry. Reed is posed standing in his uniform, wearing his leather accouterments, and holds a musket with bayonet. He stands in front of an unidentified version of the American flag. This image looks to have been enhanced with charcoal or water-based paints. On the mat, directly under the image, is the original identification of “Charles W. Reed” written in old English style and surrounded with very fine-lined scrolls. Under that appears two lines of additional information which appear to have been added much later.

The image is housed in an old deep-set wood frame (12” X 14” X 2 ¾”) with gold, silver, and ebony highlights. There are nicks on the edges from age and storage. The frame is backed with a thin slab of wood with beveled edges and held in place with very tiny cut nails. Evidence of past water stains around the perimeter of the mat, but luckily there is not damage to the image.

The history on Charles Reed is that he was a bootmaker from Abington, MA. He was 19-years-old when he enlisted on June 15, 1861. He was mustered into Company K, 7th Mass. Infantry. He was killed on May 3, 1863, during the second battle of Fredericksburg in the Chancellorsville Campaign. [jet]
